Liposuction for Vaughan, Richmond Hill, and the Greater Toronto Area
Lipoplasty, or liposuction, is a surgical procedure designed to make targeted changes to body shape through the removal of localized fat deposits. Lipoplasty, sometimes called lipo-sculpture, can quickly and easily improve body contours and proportions by removing unwanted fat deposits that are resistant to exercise and weight loss.
Liposuction is a popular cosmetic procedure because it can selectively remove stubborn and unwanted fat deposits on the:
- Inner and/or outer thighs
- Sides, commonly referred to as 'love handles'
- Male breasts (Gynecomastia)
- Face and neck, for example, under the chin
Interest in liposuction typically results from frustration with the inability to reduce certain pockets of fat, often in the hip, thigh, buttock and abdominal areas, through diet and exercise alone. Despite maintaining an ideal weight, liposuction patients have localized 'bulges' of fatty deposits that they feel disrupt the contours and proportions of their body.
Liposuction is a fast, effective way to permanently reduce these stubborn pockets of fat. The benefits of liposuction include:
- Reducing unwanted, localized deposits of fat
- Improving body contour and proportion
- Achieving a more youthful physique
- The ability to wear clothes that are more body conscious or fitted
Candidates & Criteria
The ideal candidate for liposuction is an individual who has:
- A stable weight (within the healthy range for their height)
- Localized fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise
- Good overall physical and mental health
- Firm, elastic skin that is likely to shrink following the procedure
- Realistic expectations about what can be achieved through liposuction
Liposuction is not a solution for weight loss or a substitute for diet and consistent exercise. Liposuction does not tighten loose skin, change skin texture, or improve cellulite. Instead, liposuction is designed to address localized fatty deposits that cannot be eliminated through consistent diet and exercise. The procedure can have a dramatic impact on your appearance without any significant impact on your weight.
While liposuction will not tighten loose skin, change skin texture, or improve cellulite, it may reduce the prominence of cellulite by improving disproportionate contours. While some physicians promote the idea that laser liposuction can tighten loose skin, research has found that such an approach shows no advantage when compared to other liposuction approaches.
Individuals interested in addressing loose skin around the abdomen or restoring abdominal muscles should look into abdominoplasty, sometimes referred to as a tummy tuck.
Dr. Robert Madronich is a Toronto Plastic Surgeon and a member of the Canadian Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. He holds double board certification with both a Plastic Surgery Fellowship as well as a Head and Neck Plastic Surgery Fellowship.
Dr. Madronich is well known for his fast and effective neck liposuction treatments. Neck and chin liposuction is a straightforward procedure with a short recovery period. The neck can be made slimmer in patients with excess fat around the neck area and good skin quality.
Neck liposuction can:
- Remove double chin
- Remove fatty tissue around the neck
- Improve jawline definition
Liposuction should only be performed by a qualified plastic surgeon—a medical specialist who has completed a minimum of five years of training in surgery following medical school. Plastic surgeons require a high level of surgical skill, excellent aesthetic judgment, extensive knowledge and years of practice.
Finding a certified plastic surgeon that you feel is right for you is an important part of the liposuction process. As with any cosmetic surgery, it is important to research your options and know your surgeon's professional qualifications. Patients considering aesthetic surgery should have the opportunity to discuss their expectations, and options in depth with their surgeon.
What to expect - Consultation
If you are interested in liposuction, have questions about the procedure, or want to know if you are a suitable candidate, you can book a consultation with Dr. Madronich to discuss your options and learn about his approach to plastic surgery.
During your consultation, Dr. Madronich will ask about your medical history and any medications you take, get to know you, and work to understand your needs, expectations, and goals. Dr. Madronich will talk you through options, associated costs, what you can expect in terms of recovery, as well as any risks associated with the procedure. Together you will discuss what kind of results you can reasonably expect from a liposuction procedure in the context of your physique and body proportions. You will be able to ask questions, see before and after photos of former liposuction patients, and meet the friendly staff at Madronich Plastic Surgery and Laser.
The fee for a consultation with Dr. Madronich is $100 CAD, which can be applied to the cost of liposuction, should you decide to proceed.
Surgery - How Liposuction Works
During your lipoplasty procedure, Dr. Madronich will make several, small incisions in the area to be treated through which he will insert a cannula, which is a small, stainless steel tube specifically designed for this procedure. The cannula, once placed between the upper dermis of the skin and the underlying muscle, is attached to a powerful suction pump that removes your fatty deposits without harming either your skin or underlying muscle. The type of cannula used, as well as the placement of incisions, will depend on your individual needs.
Although small liposuction areas can be done under local anesthesia, Dr. Madronich prefers to perform the majority of liposuction procedures under general anesthesia at Mackenzie Health (previously named York Central Hospital) in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

After your liposuction surgery, you can expect to feel some mild pain or soreness that can be controlled with medication. If your surgery involved your lower extremities, sitting or walking may be uncomfortable for the first days. All liposuction patients can expect to experience some bruising and swelling. In general, men tend to bruise more easily than women. The incision sites will be left open and allowed to drain for about 2-3 days, which will help reduce the swelling, and hasten healing.
Although many patients return to their normal activities within 1-2 days, we recommend that you refrain from regular exercise for at least 2 weeks. You will be required to wear a tight fitting garment for several weeks following the procedure to help with your skin elasticity. This will help promote healing, reduce swelling, and improve skin elasticity.
The skin may appear swollen after surgery, which can distort the actual results of the procedure. While some of the impact of surgery can be seen almost immediately, the final results will emerge over the course of several months.
