Breast reconstructions should only be performed by a qualified plastic surgeon—a medical specialist who has completed a minimum of five years of training in surgery following medical school. Plastic surgeons require a high level of surgical skill, excellent aesthetic judgment, extensive knowledge, and years of practice.

Finding a qualified plastic surgeon that you feel is right for you is an important part of the reconstruction process. Patients considering surgery should have the opportunity to discuss their expectations and options in depth with their surgeon.

Operation – How Breast Reconstruction Works

The most common reason for undergoing a breast reconstruction surgery is to recreate the appearance of breasts following mastectomy.

Mastectomy can be a traumatic experience for any woman. Dr. Madronich performs breast reconstruction surgery as an option for women of any age as long as they are in good health and can tolerate general anesthesia.

Surgical reconstruction of the breasts can be accomplished in two different ways: tissue expanders and implants or with your own tissues. After a mastectomy, the skin envelope may not be large enough to allow for an implant and therefore skin expansion may be required before an implant can be inserted. In a few weeks, when enough skin is available, the implant can be inserted. Another option, TRAM (transverse rectus abdominus myocutaneous) flap reconstruction, uses your own tissues, usually from the abdominal area following a tummy tuck, to create new breasts.

The best option for you can be determined during your consultation with Dr. Madronich.

Recovery

Your individual needs will determine the duration of your hospital stay. Most women can get back to work two to four weeks after implant surgery and about one to two months following surgery using their own tissues. It is important to have realistic goals with breast reconstruction but with most of these surgeries, patient satisfaction is very high.
